Effort Values
Guide by ShadowDarkraiEVs, introduced in Generation 3, are values that make a Pokémon’s stats higher the more Pokémon it defeats. Every Pokémon gives EVs when defeated; how many and for which stats depends on what species the Pokémon defeated was. For example, defeating a Gyarados grants 2 Attack EVs. For every 4 EVs a certain stat gains, it will gain 1 extra point to that stat the next time it levels up.
Of course, the amount of EVs a Pokémon can accumulate is limited. Once a stat reaches 255 EVs, any more EVs gained for that stat will not be counted. Once a Pokémon reaches a total of 510 EVs, they will stop being added completely.
Returning to our Gyarados example, let’s say it took multiple Pokémon to defeat the Gyarados. The EVs will not be split up; any Pokémon gaining Exp. from that Gyarados will gain 2 EVs (even through Exp. Share). If any of the Pokémon used in the battle fainted, those Pokémon will NOT gain EVs.
Since EVs are hidden values that can’t be seen, you will need to make note of the EVs your Pokémon accumulates.
Serebii has information on what EVs each Pokémon gives, and where these Pokémon can be found.
