EV Training
Guide by Shady GengarEV training is a necessary, but often boring part of competitive Pokémon battling. However, with this guide, you will be EV training much quicker!
If you do not have a basic understanding of how EVs work, please read this first.
Pokérus
The first step to EV training is to give your Pokémon Pokérus. To do this, grab a Pokémon with Pokérus and put it in your party. Then, battle several Pokémon with a Pokémon that you do NOT want to EV train, and periodically check the Pokémon waiting to be EV'd to see if it has Pokérus. You don’t have to fight the wild Pokémon here; you can just run from them. The point is to enter battles. The disease should spread after two or three battles. You can tell the Pokémon has Pokérus when a purple rectangle with the letters "Pkrs" appears in their summary. When a Pokémon that has Pokérus remains in your party when the date rolls over at midnight, the "Pkrs" sign will disappear and a small face will appear in the summary. This means that the Pokérus is no longer contagious; however, all its other effects will still remain. Pokérus will double the amount of EVs gains at the end of a battle.
Power Items
The second step is to make sure you have an EV power item. This will add 4 EVs in whatever stat the item corresponds to. They will only add the extra 4 EVs if the Pokémon gains EVs in that stat. The Power Items can be bought at the Battle Tower for 16 BP each. The Power Items are as follows:
| Item | Stat Effected | Added EVs |
| Power Weight | HP | +4 |
| Power Bracer | Attack | +4 |
| Power Belt | Defense | +4 |
| Power Lens | Sp. Attack | +4 |
| Power Band | Sp. Defense | +4 |
| Power Anklet | Speed | +4 |
Training Locations
| Stat Effected | Location | EVs Awarded |
| HP | Route 201 (Bidoof) Route 213 (Tuber Jared with three Gastrodon*) | 1 Each 2 Each |
| Attack | Route 212 (Kricketune and Bibarel) Route 206 (Cyclist John with two Staraptor*) | 2 Each 3 Each |
| Defense | Maniac Cave/Tunnel (Geodude and Hippopotas) | 1 Each |
| Sp. Attack | Old Chateau (Gastly) Resort Area (Golduck) | 1 Each 2 Each |
| Sp. Defense | Route 223 (Tentacruel) | 2 Each |
| Speed | Route 205 (Fisherman Andrew with six Magikarp) Route 201 (Starly) Route 228 (Poliwhirl) | 1 Each 1 Each 2 Each |
*Note that these trainers must be re-battled multiple times before they have these Pokémon.
The formula for calculating the EVs gained is:
(Base EV + 4 EVs from Power Item) x 2 (from Pokérus)
So, for example, you fight a Starly. You have Pokérus and are holding a Power Anklet.
(1 + 4) x 2 = 10
So you will gain 10 EVs from the Starly, as opposed to the usual 1. Because of this, ALWAYS use a Power Item instead of a Macho Brace. They will give you more EVs per battle. In a battle with a trainer and with a Power Item, the formula is as follows:
(Base EVs of all the Pokémon that the trainer has + 4 EVs from Power Item) x 2 (from Pokérus)
Happy EVing!
